This one slipped out of starter John Parke’s hands fully in the fifth inning. Not frequently burned by the long ball, having allowed just five over 72 innings total and none in three starts with the Knights coming into the game, he allowed three today, two back-to-back solo shots in the second and one a two-run dong that scored top prospect Adley Rutschman from a double. In the fifth, he allowed three singles in the first four batters, adding another run; entering in relief, Will Carter gave up a three-run home run to the first batter he faced, giving Parke a final line of 4 ⅓ IP, 9 H, 7 R, BB, 3 K. It was the worst start of his career, which is in its fourth season.

Nik Turley and the recently returned Matt Foster both pitched a scoreless inning, and then second baseman Matt Reynolds closed it out on the mound, allowing one run on three singles.

Mikie Mahtook went 4-for-4 with three doubles and Gavin Sheets had a walk and three hits, including his 10th home run of the season and 12th double. In 50 games, Sheets is batting .307/.369/.526. Jake Burger, playing in his third game back from a brief IL stint, went 1-for-5 and played third and second base. Matt Reynolds went deep in the eighth, scoring Micker Adolfo from a double. Adolfo went 5-for-28 in his first eight games with the Knights at the end of July (.179/.258/.429, one double, two home runs), and in 10 games since then, today’s not included, he is 13-for-34 (.382/.432/.706, three doubles, one triple, two home runs). Overall, he is thriving in Charlotte, with a line of .292/.361/.585 after tonight’s game.

Valiantly, the Barons played a doubleheader to try to cater to minor league fanatics disappointed by the double Dash rainout today, but game one played out in unsatisfactory fashion, offense weak and starting pitcher Ofreidy Gómez the subject of an unwelcoming return to Double-A. Gómez started the season a Baron, was promoted to a Knight about a month in, and is now a Baron again after a disappointing 16-game stint up there. He had pitched very well in his early time with the Barons, which makes sense, because he was promoted; tonight, though, he allowed two runs in the second inning, featuring two walks, two wild pitches, and one stolen base. With tonight’s effort, he now has 18 ⅔ innings each in Triple-A and Double-A; his Triple-A ERA is 8.20 and Double-A ERA is 1.93.

Zach Muckenhirn has been nails all year out of the Barons bullpen, but tonight was not his night, as he escaped a bases-loaded situation (technically) by allowing a bases-clearing double. Peter Tago entered and immediately stopped the bleeding, finishing it out with three strong scoreless innings, but the damage was done.

Yolbert Sánchez has been absolutely tearing it up in Birmingham, a clause that can so seldom be written these last few seasons about position player prospects at that level. The tear continued with a 1-for-2, HBP day, his single driving in Craig Dedelow from his 20th double to score the Barons’ only run. In 21 games, the shortstop is batting .341/.379/.415. Yoelkis Céspedes, a more recent addition to the lineup, is on a two-game hitting streak in two games played—he went 2-for-4 yesterday and followed it up with 1-for-3 today. Lenyn Sosa and Jameson Fisher provided the only other two hits, Sosa’s a double; Xavier Fernández drew the team’s only walk.

Barons game two was much improved, pitching still on the hook for five runs, but bats waking up just enough to pull this one out by one. Yolbert Sánchez homered for the second time as a Baron in the third, and they added another in the fourth when Joe DeCarlo grounded out in a second-and-third situation. Yoelkis Céspedes tripled for the first time in his White Sox career, scoring Romy González, and then Lenyn Sosa hit his fourth Barons double to score him. The final two Barons runs scored on González’s 20th dinger of the year, scoring DeCarlo as well and bumping González up to a two-way tie for second in the whatever the Southern League is calling itself these days.

Emilio Vargas has been having an impressive season on the mound, and one 4 ⅓ IP, three-run outing isn’t going to change that. He did give up three runs over 4 ⅓ innings though, that was not rhetorical. He also walked three, walks being one of his concern points this year. He also allowed two home runs, which is worth mentioning because entering tonight’s game, he had allowed just three all season over 57 ⅔ innings. This outing nudged his WHIP just over 1.000; it was at 0.988. Flamethrowing Luis Ledo contributed 1 ⅔ innings of scoreless relief, and Anderson Severino’s two seventh-inning runs (a doubleheader ninth) only served to make things interesting instead of disastrous.

Matt Thompson’s season is much more concerned about process, healing, and growth, rather than pitching for a nice-looking stat line. This has led to some ugly ones, but today’s, while having a lot going on, isn’t close to his worst. His pitch count of 79 certainly wasn’t helped by his defense, with one error and two passed balls while he was on the mound (although to their credit, catcher Richard García also picked a guy off second). Thompson’s final line was 4 IP, 8 H, 4 R (3 ER), 2 BB, 5 K and his seventh loss with Kannapolis (eighth overall, the other one from his single two-inning appearance in the ACL for rehab).

Corey Stone entered in relief and was also stung by a García passed ball, but also did himself no favors by hitting batters back-to-back to load the bases in the third. He allowed three runs total that inning, two earned. Theo Denlinger, 25 years old and the Sox’s seventh-round draft pick this year, has impressed with the Ballers and that continued today. He allowed a run for the second time in six outings, unearned on a throwing error by poor García, whose final tally behind the plate was three passed balls and one error (but also a pickoff at second base and laying down the tag on a runner trying to steal home. He also grounded into the game-ending double play). Fraser Ellard, selected right after Denlinger in the eight round, gave up four runs (three earned, Samil Polanco’s 21st error at third) for the first four runs of his Low-A career. Rigo Fernandez finished it off with a ninth that could have gone much worse than the four-hit, two-run affair it was. The Wood Ducks scored 10 runs in the last four innings.

Despite 10 hits, the Ballers were only able to score three times, grounding into two doubles plays and going 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position. Harvin Mendoza hit a second-inning triple and scored on Chase Krogman’s sac fly. In the third, 19-year-old Wilber Sanchez homered, his second of the year. They picked up their third and final run on a Polanco force-out in the fifth, scoring Jeremiah Burks from a leadoff walk. James Beard and Sanchez both ended up with three hits; Burks had two.

The ACL White Sox couldn’t keep the ACL Brewers Blue from scoring late and often and dropped their record to 15-22 with an 8-5 loss. The 18-year-old Cristian Mena has had a rocky introduction to stateside ball, but today was one of his better starts, going three innings and giving up two runs, walking two and striking out one. Dilmer Mejia, who took some time off to pitch for Nicaragua in the Olympics last month, allowed three unearned runs in three innings—he struck out the first two batters of the sixth, the third reached on Wes Kath’s first error at third base, then the next two batters hit a double and home run. Brandon Jenkins and Deivi Diaz covered three innings and allowed one earned run each, Diaz also adding an unearned one on Colson Montgomery’s third error.

The Sox mashed three single-serving taters off the bats of Benyamin Bailey, Edwin Peralta, and Johnabiell Laureano. Montgomery and Kath continue holding their own, both going 1-for-5, Montgomery with a walk as well. Another run came in the sixth when Jefferson Mendoza drew a two-out bases-loaded walk, and Peralta capped it off in the seventh with a single to score Logan Glass. The team did have trouble cooking in the ninth, but it ended up them being cooked in the end: Bailey singled to start the frame and advanced to second on that most noble of technicalities, the balk; Cameron Butler walked to make it moot, putting the first two on with nobody out in an 8-5 game, but Laureano, Peralta, and Montgomery struck out in order to end it.

Top pitching prospect Norge Vera impressed again in his second appearance, not striking out the entire side this time but still getting one whiff over his one inning of work. The rest of the pitching was solid, Guillermo Cuevas putting down five innings out of the bullpen, striking out seven and allowing two hits and two runs, 18-year-old Emerson Talavera with a scoreless three innings for the save. Talavera has appeared in eight games for the DSL this year, throwing 22 innings and maintaining a 1.23 ERA and 1.000 WHIP (three earned runs, eight walks, 22 strikeouts).

In traditional DSL fashion, there is something weird about the box score—today, it’s that the DSL Sox attempted to steal nine bases (second base eight times, third base once) and were successful in six of those attempts (all second base). Cesar Jiménez picked up two to supplement his 3-for-4 day; Layant Tapis was victorious at second base but not third; Randel Mondesi also had a split, one stole base, one PO/CS.

In fact, all this baserunning led directly to the first Sox run of the game; Arxy Hernandez was caught stealing after he singled, but in the ensuing chaos, Jiménez, who had singled and stolen a base himself, was able to scamper home. Later in the inning, Layant Tapia walked and was caught stealing, then Roberth Gutierrez walked and was not caught stealing, scoring later on Fernando Vargas’s double. Their last two runs came in the seventh and eighth, one a Tapia sacrifice fly to score Jiménez after he singled and stole a base, the other Victor Quezada’s sacrifice to bring in Mondesi, who—say it with me—had singled and stolen a base.

DSL miscellania: Between both teams, just three errors, one passed ball, two wild pitches, a balk, and a hit by pitch.
