What to watch for with the Yankees rained out

Yankees fans who were looking forward to watching the Bombers complete a four-game sweep of the Twins will undoubtedly feel disappointed by the postponement of Sunday afternoon’s series finale due to the forecast of severe inclement weather. The game has been rescheduled for Monday, Sept. 13, at 2:05 p.m. ET at Yankee Stadium.

The good news? Even without the Yankees to watch, there are plenty of ways to get your baseball fix on Sunday. Now that the Yankees have won nine games straight and are closing in on the AL Wild Card, Sunday’s rainout offers fans an opportunity to tune in to other games around the league that are potentially relevant to the Yankees’ playoff race. Here is your guide to other matchups on Sunday that are worth checking out:

MLB Viewing Guide: Sunday, August 22, 2021

Chicago White Sox vs. Tampa Bay Rays (1:10 pm ET)

How to watch—CWS: NBC Sports Chicago TB: Bally Sports Sun

Tampa Bay hosts the White Sox at Tropicana Field, with Chris Archer on the bump facing Chicago’s Reynaldo López. Considering the Rays are still ahead in the AL East by four games, the outcome of this series directly affects the Yankees’ path to the postseason. A White Sox win will help the Yankees make up ground on the Rays’ lead in the division. There is also the possibility of the White Sox facing the Yankees in the ALCS, which adds another point of interest to this series.

San Francisco Giants vs. Oakland Athletics (4:07 pm ET)

How to watch—SF: NBC Sports Bay Area OAK: NBC Sports California

Though interleague games don’t carry the same weight as those featuring division rivals, it’s always fun to watch these crosstown teams face each other in the so-called Bay Bridge Series. The Giants and A’s split the first two games of this one, so whatever happens in Sunday’s contest determines the outcome of the series. At 79-44, the Giants have the best record in MLB, and the A’s are a mere two games behind the Yankees in the AL Wild Card Race. A win for Oakland would position the A’s nearly neck-and-neck with New York. This should be an interesting game to watch.

Texas Rangers vs. Boston Red Sox (1:10 pm ET)

How to watch—TEX: Bally Sports Southwest BOS: NESN

Even though the Red Sox shutout the Rangers in the series opener, the Rangers fought back and were able to snap their four-game skid in yesterday’s game at Fenway Park. Not only that, the Rangers won in a 10-1 blowout, beating Boston in embarrassing fashion. If Boston wants a chance of getting back into the playoff picture, the team needs to start piling on wins against weaker teams like the Rangers. A Red Sox loss to the Rangers on Sunday could be a huge morale killer in Boston—not to mention the Yankees fans who tune in will be treated with delightful schadenfreude. That said, the Red Sox are still very much in contention and they won’t be in New York’s rearview mirror just yet, should they manage to fight back and eke out a win over Texas.

Cleveland vs. Los Angeles Angels (7:00 pm ET)

How to watch: ESPN

Cleveland and the Angels make the trip to Williamsport, Pa. on Sunday to play in Major League Baseball’s Little League Classic at Muncy Bank Ballpark at Historic Bowman Field. The game airs on ESPN’s Sunday Night Baseball and will include on-field ceremonies with players from the Little League World Series, which is currently being played in Williamsport.
